Four months after the unexpected death of her husband, Cinnamin Herring travels from her home in North Carolina to visit and photograph the majestic forests and cities of California as she prepares to grieve the loss of closest friend and true love.

Cinnamin camps and hikes in Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon as she runs from inevitable grief.


On her journey, Cinnamin experiences the powerful presence of enormous Sequoia trees, meets interesting characters, and jumps from Muir Rock in Kings Canyon National Forest. Intermingled with her wilderness adventures are tales of people and places Cinnamin visits from Los Angeles to San Francisco.


Devastated by her loss and horrified about her future, Cinnamin finds solace in unexpected places as she roams California and allows the reality of her loss to seep in. Will she be able to navigate without the partner who has been by her side since she was eighteen years old? Will she find the hope she needs to carry on?

I read your diary of your CA trip to find your new bearings with a great deal of interest. Your traveled many of the areas I and my now deceased wife traveled when I was Senior Corporate ManTech Project Engineer in Aerospace for Rohr Corporation in Chula Vista CA and Amy was first starting her Journey as a Lutheran Pastor. The main difference in the journey we both took is Amy died slowly from Alzheimer on 11 March 2020 rather than suddenly.
